Hee Jeung Oh honored by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry

March 3, 2025

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) has named Hee Jeung Oh, assistant professor of chemical engineering in the Penn State College of Engineering, a Young Observer. The award provides recipients $2,500 in fellowship funding and a spot at the 53rd IUAPC General Assembly happening concurrently with the 50th World Chemistry Congress on July 12-19 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Recipients are selected by the U.S. National Committee of the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine. The program is open to U.S. scientists and engineers under the age of 45 and serves as a resource for young researchers looking to build an international network of collaborators, learn about global research opportunities and participate in IUPAC activities like the general assembly.

Oh obtained her bachelor's degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea and her doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin. She has received several professional awards throughout her career, including a 2024 Roy Award, a FRI/John G. Kunesh Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, a Non-Tenured Faculty Award from industrial and consumer technology company 3M, a nomination to participate in the National Academy of Engineering’s Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering symposium and more. Her research areas are at the intersection of chemical engineering, materials science and molecular transport, focusing on designing advanced polymer membranes for efficient chemical separation.
