Willam Higgins, Christos Argyropoulos named fellows of international society

Jan 29, 2025

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Two professors in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), William Higgins and Christos Argyropoulos, were recently named fellows of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). They join 45 additional researchers from around the world chosen as SPIE fellows in 2025.

Since SPIE’s inception in 1955, more than 1,800 members have earned the elevation to fellow, according to the society. SPIE membership includes access to a variety of publication and career-building opportunities to researchers at the forefront of light-based science and technology. Fellows exemplify the values of the society through their contributions to the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics and imaging.

Higgins is a distinguished professor of electrical engineering in EECS. He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his doctorate from the University of Illinois. SPIE elevated Higgins to the title of fellow due to his contributions to medical imaging and image-guided endoscopy systems.

Argyropoulos is an associate professor of electrical engineering in EECS. He received his doctorate from the Queen Mary University of London and spent time as a faculty member at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln prior to his time at Penn State. SPIE named Argyropoulos a fellow due to his ongoing research in the fields of metamaterials and nanophotonics.
