Ram Narayanan named distinguished alumnus by alma mater

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ram Narayanan, professor of electrical engineering in Penn State’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, was named one of 11 recipients of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras’s (IIT Madras) 2023 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

The award is the highest honor bestowed by IIT Madras on its alumni and recognizes their achievements in their respective fields of expertise, according to the school’s website. Narayanan earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from IIT Madras in 1976, after which he earned a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Massachusetts.

Narayanan was nominated in the category of academic excellence, which lauds academic achievements and honors, journal papers published, students mentored and more. He was nominated by fellow alumnus Ajita Rajendra, former chief executive officer of A.O. Smith Corporation, who earned the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2015.

Narayanan will receive the award in the fall at the 64th IIT Madras Institute Day.
