Media mention: ‘Anti-laser can make any object suck in light’

August 25, 2022

Where: New Scientist magazine, “Anti-laser can make any object suck in light

Who: Sahin Ozdemir, professor of engineering science and mechanics

What: Sahin Ozdemir, professor of engineering science and mechanics, was recently quoted in a New Scientist magazine story about a new anti-laser device that uses mirrors and lenses to turn any object into a highly efficient light absorber. Ozdemir — who did not conduct this research but commented on it as an expert in the field — said that, previously, similar devices perfectly absorbed only specific light wave shapes and only when they were illuminated at particular angles. The anti-laser works for all shapes and angles and could be used to detect light from very faint stars.
