Computer science and engineering major named College of Engineering marshal

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ranjani Suraj has been named the summer 2026 student marshal for the Penn State College of Engineering. Suraj will receive bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science and engineering through Penn State's Integrated Undergraduate-Graduate (IUG) Program, along with a minor in mathematics, during the University's undergraduate commencement ceremony, which will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Student marshals are selected for their exceptional academic achievement and significant contributions to student life.
“I am extremely grateful for the honor of getting to be the student marshal for the College of Engineering,” Suraj said. “Penn State has challenged me, inspired me and given me opportunities that have shaped both my academic journey and my future interests.”
Suraj is a graduate of Greenwood High International School in Bangalore, India. A Schreyer Honors College Scholar, she earned a place on the dean's list every semester at Penn State and received the President Walker Award for academic excellence.
At Penn State, Suraj conducted undergraduate research in theoretical computer science, implementing more efficient algorithms for probabilistic sampling on dynamic graphs. She also contributed to the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team (SAE AutoDrive) as a member of the perception team, developing localization software for the team's autonomous vehicle.
Beyond her research, Suraj served as vice president of the Quantum Computing Club at Penn State, participated in HackPSU and TartanHacks and performed Bharatanatyam with Nritya, a student organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Indian classical dance.
“Penn State has given me the freedom to explore many different areas of computer science and discover the work I am most passionate about,” she said. “I am especially grateful to the faculty, mentors, teammates and friends who encouraged and inspired me to challenge myself to grow throughout my time here.”
Suraj completed internships with Zentron Labs and Erie Insurance, where she gained experience in computer vision, software engineering and cloud infrastructure. Following graduation, she will join IBM as a software engineer developing technologies that support operating systems and AI enablement for enterprise computing.
