Elia Merzari receives American Nuclear Society Technical Achievement Award

Sept 17, 2026

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Elia Merzari, professor of nuclear engineering and mechanical engineering, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 American Nuclear Society (ANS) Technical Achievement Award (TAA).

The award recognizes Merzari’s seminal contributions to thermal-hydraulic science, multiscale and multiphysics reactor simulation, and the translation of high-fidelity methods into engineering practice, as well as his distinguished professional service and international leadership in reactor thermal hydraulics. Merzari’s work combines advanced computational modeling with engineering applications to improve the understanding and safety of nuclear reactor systems. Merzari will be recognized during a brief award ceremony at the 2026 ANS Winter Meeting in Phoenix in November. A formal ceremony and TAA lecture will follow in 2027.

Merzari was also recently named a finalist for the Association for Computing Machinery Gordon Bell Prize, an international award recognizing outstanding achievements in high-performance computing.
