Engineering grad student awarded Best Poster for electrical grid simulation research

Sept 18, 2026

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Soumyajit Gangopadhyay, an electrical engineering graduate student, received the Best Poster Award at the 2026 Annual Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Workshop, held Aug. 18-21 in Washington, D.C.

The workshop was organized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). The award recognized Gangopadhyay’s research investigating the stability of hybrid discretization methods used in electromagnetic transient simulations through case studies and theoretical analysis.

Electromagnetic transient simulations are used to study how electrical systems respond to rapid changes, such as faults, switching events and changes in power-system conditions. Hybrid discretization methods are computational techniques that combine different approaches for representing electrical systems over time, helping researchers model complex power-system behavior more efficiently.

Gangopadhyay is advised by Nilanjan Ray Chaudhuri, professor of electrical engineering. The Best Poster Award is a recognition from the DOE and NERC in conjunction with Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
