Media Mention: ‘US scientists boost EV battery efficiency with ‘cold’ manufacturing method’

Apr 25, 2025

Where: Interesting Engineering, “US Scientists Boost EV Battery Efficiency with ‘Cold’ Manufacturing Method

Who: Penn State researchers, led by Hongtao Sun, assistant professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering

What: Interesting Engineering highlights Penn State’s development of a cold sintering process that enables low-temperature fabrication of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) for electric vehicle batteries. The method combines pressure and a small amount of solvent to create a highly conductive polymer-in-ceramic composite, improving ionic conductivity and enabling higher voltage performance. The approach offers a safer, more energy-efficient alternative to traditional battery manufacturing and could support scalable, sustainable production in the future.
