UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Bono Shih, a postdoctoral scholar jointly appointed in the Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education and the Rock Ethics Institute at Penn State, has been selected as a 2025 Frontiers in Education (FIE) New Faculty Fellow.
The FIE New Faculty Fellow program honors early-career scholars who demonstrate exceptional promise in advancing engineering and computing education through innovative teaching, research and service. Shih was recognized for his interdisciplinary contributions at the intersections of engineering ethics education, faculty development and artificial intelligence (AI) literacy.
In collaboration with colleagues, Shih has co-authored multiple publications on engineering ethics instructional development, including papers presented at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference, Teaching Ethics journal and the forthcoming Frontiers in Education Conference. At Penn State, he co-developed an AI literacy module for faculty and graduate teaching assistants, contributing to its components on AI ethics and academic integrity.
Shih also collaborates externally on projects that integrate ethical considerations into educational AI systems, prepare STEM students for responsible AI development and use AI tools to analyze students’ ethical reasoning. His broader scholarship includes an article on the history and philosophy of AI, encyclopedia entries on AI literacy and AI in foreign policy, and a co-authored book, Engineers and the Two Taiwans (Springer, 2024).
