Vijaykrishnan Narayanan awarded best paper award for signal processing research

Jan 8, 2025

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. Vijaykrishnan Narayanan, the A. Robert Noll Chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Associate Dean for Innovation, received two awards from Springer — the Sydney R. Parker Best Paper Award and the M.N.S. Swamy Award —for the best paper on signal processing published in the Journal of Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing.

Narayanan received the awards for a paper he helped co-author, “STAR: Efficient SpatioTemporal Modeling for Action Recognition,” which was published in the journal’s February 2023 issue. The paper discusses SpatioTemporal modeling, which is an innovative approach to improve action recognition in video. This form of modeling reduces the computational complexity of capturing information from video, allowing for more efficiency using less resources. This research was sponsored in part by a grant from the Semiconductor Research Corporation JUMP program.

Awardees received a certificate and a small cash prize to go along with the award. The paper’s other co-authors include Abhijeet Kumar, Abhishek Kumar and Samuel Abrams, who were Penn State students at the time of publication.
