“Additive Manufacturing with Metals” receives book award from international society
Apr 10, 2025
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) selected “Additive Manufacturing with Metals,” a book authored by one Penn State industrial engineering faculty member and three faculty members formerly affiliated with Penn State, the 2025 IISE/Joint Publishers Book of the Year award. The honor recognizes an outstanding book that focuses on a facet of industrial engineering, improves education or furthers the profession. A formal commemoration for the award will be held at the IISE Annual Conference on May 31-June 3 in Atlanta.
The book was authored by Sanjay Joshi, professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering, and three individuals who were Penn State faculty at the time of writing: Richard Martukanitz, former director of Penn State’s Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition and head of the Laser Processing Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL), Abdalla Nassar, a former research associate at ARL, and Pan Michaleris, former professor of mechanical engineering and of nuclear engineering.
The book offers an in-depth exploration of metal additive manufacturing — more commonly known as 3D printing — a process that “prints” a metal structure based on a digital model by repeatedly layering material. It discusses design and digital workflows, process science and reliability, metallic systems, quality assurance and the applications of additive manufacturing.
IISE is an international nonprofit association that provides leadership for the application, training, research and development of industrial and systems engineering, according to IISE. Since its inception in 1948, IISE has connected members from across the globe through professional conferences, networking events, training workshops and more. Additionally, IISE promotes more than 25 awards and scholarships to members, including the IISE Joint Publishers Book of the Year award.
