Feb 28, 2025
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Andrea Gregg, associate research professor of mechanical engineering and director of learning experience design, received two awards for a book she co-authored on online course design — the 2025 Phillip E. Frandson Award for Literature and the American Library Association’s (ALA) CHOICE Outstanding Academic Titles Award for 2024.
The book, titled “High-Impact Design for Online Courses: Blueprinting Quality Digital Learning in Eight Practical Steps” establishes a design model to help faculty and instructional designers create high quality online and hybrid courses. Co-authored with Penny Ralston-Berg, a senior instructional designer for Penn State World Campus, and Bethany Simunich, director of research and innovation at online learning nonprofit Quality Matters, the book serves as a guide to planning and executing effective online teaching and learning.
The Phillip E. Frandson Award for Literature is given by the University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) and recognizes excellence in achievement for literature written about the theory or practice of professional, continuing or online education. In addition to recognition, the award brings with it promotional research opportunities and an invitation to the UPCEA 2025 Annual Conference on March 24-26 in Denver.
The CHOICE Outstanding Academic Titles Award recognizes the ALA’s Association of College and Research Libraries choices for the best scholarly titles of the year. Gregg’s book, in addition to the other titles chosen, will be featured on the Choice360 website and newsletter through a series of curated lists. The complete list will be featured in its entirety in an upcoming issue of Choice Magazine.
