Oct 27, 2025

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Three graduate students in electrical engineering — Tyler Burns, Connor Haney and Wolfgang VonGetzie — have been selected to receive the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) Graduate Scholar Awards. All three students are involved in the University’s Center for Excellence in Directed Energy which was established earlier this year.

The DEPS Graduate Scholar Awards are supported through grants from the Office of Naval Research and recognize graduate students nationwide who are advancing research in directed energy technologies.

Burns, Haney and VonGetzie were selected for their exceptional academic performance and research contributions to high-power microwave technologies.

The DEPS Graduate Scholar Awards program aims to foster the next generation of experts in directed energy, including high-power microwave and ultra-short pulse laser research, by providing financial support and recognition to outstanding graduate students in the field, according to their website.
