UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Learning Factory will host its biannual end-of-semester showcase for engineering students to present their cornerstone and capstone design projects.

The in-person showcase will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Bryce Jordan Center, while a virtual showcase will take place on Friday, Dec. 12 through Friday, Dec. 19. Both versions of the event are free and open to the public.

The showcase offers first-year cornerstone and senior capstone engineering students across the College of Engineering the opportunity to present their solutions to real-world design problems posed by sponsors. Typically, teams of four to six students work for 15 weeks designing a product, process or service for a local or national firm or governmental office. They then present their work at the showcase, which serves as the end of the largest multidisciplinary, client-sponsored capstone program in the world. Projects showcased in past events have ranged from adaptive technology to help people living with disabilities to a vehicle that can operate with an incredibly high fuel efficiency rating.

Projects, posters and videos will be judged for awards, including a People’s Choice Award, voted on by attendees of both the in-person and virtual versions of the showcase. Winners will be announced at the end of the showcase and listed on the showcase website.

A complete list of current projects and sponsors will be available on the Learning Factory website starting Dec. 12. Companies interested in sponsoring projects for future Learning Factory showcases can find more information here.
