Sukwon Choi elevated to senior member of IEEE

June 23, 2025

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Sukwon Choi, associate professor of mechanical engineering in the Penn State College of Engineering, has been elevated to the grade of senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest technical professional organization of engineers and technology professionals dedicated to advancing technology worldwide.

The elevation was confirmed in a letter from the 2025 IEEE President and CEO, who noted that senior member is the highest professional grade for which an IEEE member may apply. This recognition is reserved for individuals with significant professional experience, demonstrated accomplishments and maturity in their fields.

Only 10% of IEEE’s nearly half a million members hold the senior member designation, making it a notable milestone in Choi’s career. IEEE acknowledged Choi’s individual achievements and Penn State’s role in fostering an environment of engineering excellence.

“We are very pleased to have Sukwon Choi join the elite rank of IEEE senior members — Sukwon should be proud of the professional accomplishments that led to this recognition,” the recognition letter stated.
