Amir Sheikhi receives early investigator award for work in polymer engineering

March 28, 2024

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Amir Sheikhi, assistant professor of chemical engineering and the Dorothy Foehr Huck and J. Lloyd Huck Early Career Chair in Biomaterials and Regenerative Engineering at Penn State, received the 2024 PMSE Early Investigator Award from the American Chemical Society Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (ACS PMSE).

This award recognizes “early-career professional accomplishments in the field of polymer science and engineering,” according to the award webpage. Sheikhi is one of 24 individuals selected to receive this award.

The research that earned Sheikhi this award focuses on engineering polymeric materials to address antibiotic resistant bacteria while “protecting” current antibiotics. His research team aims to design edible ion-exchange polymers that work hand-in-hand with antibiotics to mimic the bacterial surface and selectively remove excess antibiotics from the GI tract before they impact the bacteria and select for resistance.
