UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — John Case, graduate student in acoustics in the Penn State College of Engineering, received a best paper award at the Acoustics 2023 Conference, hosted by the Acoustical Society of America and the Australian Acoustical Society, held Dec. 4-8 in Sydney, Australia.
His paper, “Marine and lacustrine ice fracture detection,” focused on using machine learning algorithms to detect and classify ice fracturing events though their acoustic signature. According to the paper, this research will help detect and classify fracturing events accurately and efficiently with potential applications for climate science, fisheries and cultural impacts.
