UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Yifan Lu has been named the fall 2023 student marshal for the Penn State College of Engineering. Lu earned bachelor’s degrees in computer science from the College of Engineering and in economics from the College of Liberal Arts. He will also receive a minor in mathematics.

The College of Engineering student marshal is selected for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions to engineering student life. The student marshal leads the procession of graduates from their college during the commencement ceremony, which will be held at 9 a.m. on Dec. 16 in the Bryce Jordan Center at University Park.

A graduate of State College Area High School, Lu received several awards, honors and scholarships while at Penn State, including the President Walker Award, President Sparks Award, the Department of Economics Undergraduate Scholarship, Student Affairs Scholarship and Evan Pugh Scholar Award. He also won first place honors in the 2021 CodePSU competition and was a finalist in the 2021 Leonhard Speaking Contest.

Lu tutored and served as a grader, learning assistant and teaching assistant for several classes and he was a member of the Asian American Christian Fellowship. He made the dean’s list every semester and will graduate with a 4.0 grade point average.

“The most valuable lesson I’ve learned in my time at Penn State is that opportunities won’t land in your lap,” Lu said. “I like to stay in my comfort zone, but it was only through branching out that I was able to acquire internships, meet amazing people and fully embrace my time here at Penn State.”

After graduation, Lu plans to spend time traveling before joining the workforce and one day pursuing a master of business administration degree.
