Tamy Guimarães recognized for building connections between Brazil and US

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Tamy Guimarães, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Penn State, was named a 2022 recipient of the Embassy of Brazil’s Science and Technology Prize.
The award is given by the Embassy of Brazil in the United States to Brazilian “scientists and entrepreneurs who help build bridges between Brazil and the United States,” according to the embassy’s press release. It was presented by Ambassador Nestor Forster Jr. to the six recipients during the Fifth Meeting of the Scientific and Technological Diaspora of Brazil in the United States on Dec. 6, 2022.
“The role of the faculty in advancing Penn State internationalization efforts is essential,” said Siela Maximova, director of strategy for Latin America and the Caribbean at Penn State Global.
“Tamy Guimarães’ research and her work with international students represents an important contribution to our engagement in Brazil, and I am proud that the Embassy of Brazil is recognizing and awarding her efforts!”
Guimarães’ research focuses on the development of instrumentation and measurement techniques to improve experimental fluid dynamics and aerodynamics research. She recently received a grant from the Partners of Americas Innovation Fund for a one-year long program with Brazil in which she and her collaborators will study the geometry of amphibious aircraft and propose optimizations to make it more suitable for operations in the Amazon rainforest. As part of the program, two Penn State mechanical engineering undergraduate students will go with Guimarães to Brazil during spring break, and four Brazilian students will come to Penn State for a month during the summer.
“One of my main goals as an immigrant working as a professor in the U.S. is to provide opportunities for international students to come to the U.S. and experience what it is like to be in a world-class institution working alongside people from all over the world,” Guimarães said. “Receiving this award is a great indication that my efforts are worth it and are being recognized by my country.”
