UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — SME, formerly known as the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, has named two Penn Staters to their 10th annual 30 Under 30 list, recognizing them as future leaders of manufacturing. The full list was published in the society’s magazine, Manufacturing Engineering.

According to the magazine, the honorees “are making big contributions not only to the manufacturing industry but also [to] groups that rely on volunteers.”

Qianyu Hu, a doctoral candidate in the Penn State Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, earned her master of science in industrial engineering from Penn State in 2016. Her doctoral research focuses on using deep learning and machine learning to detect fraud while preserving data privacy. Soundar Kumara, Allen E. Pearce and Allen M. Pearce Professor of Industrial Engineering, serves as Hu’s adviser.

“Our research is among the first to present a privacy-preserving machine learning framework to build a smart and secure manufacturing system,” Hu said in the magazine. “If during my career, I can contribute to… collaborative cloud manufacturing while maintain[ing] good privacy, that would be wonderful.”

Kumara also advised the other SME honoree, Rico Polim, who earned a master of science and bachelor of science in industrial engineering from Penn State in 2016. Polim, who is currently a senior applied scientist for Amazon Web Services, was a Schreyer Honors College Scholar and served as the College of Engineering’s student marshal in fall of 2016.

According to the magazine, Polim’s current position provides the opportunity to solve problems at scale by developing machine-learning models to improve cloud capacity and customer experience. Eventually, he said, he would like to focus on creating educational opportunities for others.
