UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Madison Canter, a third-year student majoring in architectural engineering at Penn State, grew up watching her father work in facilities and property management. From a young age, she enjoyed learning the ins and outs of building construction and fell in love with building design.

“I initially applied to schools for civil engineering because, at the time, I didn’t know that architectural engineering was an option,” Canter said. “I later had the opportunity to sit down with Professor Moses Ling while touring Penn State during my senior year of high school, and he convinced me that architectural engineering was the best fit for my interests.”

Canter recently received the Turner Construction Company Scholarship for Diversity and Inclusion in the Department of Architectural Engineering and will intern with Turner Construction with a project management team this summer.

“I am extremely grateful to the Turner Company and their commitment to helping students succeed,” Canter said. “At the moment, I am planning to pursue a career as a project engineer and then see where my experience takes me. I love being in the field and seeing the work I put on paper turn into reality.”

This scholarship aims to promote diversity and inclusion in engineering by providing financial support and professional development to underrepresented students pursuing degrees in architectural engineering at Penn State.

“Representation is an important part of making sure that younger generations know that they are capable of becoming engineers,” Canter said. “Diversity, equity and inclusion means creating a space were everyone, regardless of race or gender, has the opportunity to be included and be successful.”

Canter said receiving this scholarship made her feel recognized for her hard work and will ultimately help her continue to pursue her career goals.

“As a woman in engineering, in construction specifically, I sometimes feel like an outsider,” Canter said. “This scholarship will help me continue my studies and find my place in the industry.”

Canter credited Penn State and the Department of Architectural Engineering for providing the support that helped her obtain this scholarship.

“Penn State has provided me with countless resources to help with everything from a first-rate education to resume building to developing professional connections,” Canter said. “I am thankful to the architectural engineering department for a lot, including helping me earn this scholarship.”
