UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Lori Gordon, partner in the intellectual property practice of Perkins Coie, LLP, has been named one of 11 recipients of the 2022 Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award by the Penn State College of Engineering.

Gordon — who describes herself as a lifetime advocate for increasing representation of women in engineering and in IP law — graduated cum laude with her bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Layfayette College. After earning her master of science in electrical engineering from Penn State in 1992, Gordon joined Bell Communications Research (Bellcore) as a member of the technical staff, focusing on network security and fraud prevention. While working as an engineer at Bellcore, Gordon attended law school in the evening, earning her juris doctor degree in 2003.

Gordon’s legal career focuses intensively on inter partes matters, the Latin phrase for legal concerns involving multiple parties, including contested case proceedings in front of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Her deep experience includes more than 250 PTAB trials. Gordon leverages her engineering background to represent clients in a broad range of industries, including communications, semiconductor devices and fabrication, data security, cryptography, machine learning, medical devices and electronic commerce.

In 2022, she was recognized by the PTAB Bar Association as the top woman litigator since the PTAB’s founding. She has also been named to Managing Intellectual Property’s list of Top 250 Women in IP in the world seven times.
