UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Xunyi Zhou, a computer science major in the Penn State School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with a minor in mathematics, has been named the College of Engineering’s student marshal for summer 2021 commencement.

College of Engineering student marshals are selected for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions to engineering student life.

“Xunyi is a superb student well deserving of recognition as the College of Engineering’s student marshal for the summer 2021 graduating class,” said Brad Sottile, lecturer in computer science and engineering and in aerospace engineering and Zhou’s adviser.

Zhou, the daughter of Pingting Hu and Feng Zhou, is from Wuxi, China, and attended Great Plains Lutheran High School in Watertown, South Dakota.

“I feel very honored and thankful for this [recognition],” she said. “It gives me a lot of encouragement.”

While at Penn State, Zhou served as the vice president of the web development club. She was also a learning assistant in the fall of 2020.

“One thing I especially appreciated during my time here is the opportunity to meet different people,” she said. “I was able to find a group of friends that broadens my perspective and gives me challenges, reflections and inspirations constantly.”

After graduation, Zhou plans to attend graduate school for computer science.
