UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Vijaykrishnan Narayanan, A. Robert Noll Chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, recently received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society’s 2021 Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award. He received this award for “contributions to cross-layer power-aware architectures leveraging post-CMOS technology,” according to the IEEE Computer Society’s website.

The IEEE Computer Society honored Narayanan for his outstanding and significant contributions to the fields of computer and information science, engineering and computer technology during the past 15 years, according to the organization’s website. IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization aimed at advancing technology and innovation for the benefit of humanity.

“Vijay’s research has helped and will continue to help advance the field of computer science and engineering, especially with regard to integrated circuits and systems, computer architecture and power-aware computing,” said Chita Das, department head and distinguished professor of computer science and engineering. “This recognition for his work is well deserved.”

With complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology scaling nearing its limits, Narayanan’s contributions in the past decade on designing circuits and systems leveraging post-CMOS devices have been instrumental in shaping the field and bridging research communities. Since emerging devices are often not drop-in replacements for CMOS, Narayanan’s work has addressed the critical need for cross-layer design of devices, circuits, architecture and systems.

“This award is a recognition not only for me, but for all my students and collaborators without whom much of the work could not have been accomplished,” Narayanan said. “I would like to specifically thank the sponsors of my research over the years — the National Science Foundation, the Semiconductor Research Corporation, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Department of Energy — and my family for all the extra hours that they let me work.”
