UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Andrea Castaneda was named the spring 2022 student marshal for industrial engineering. Castaneda will receive her bachelor of science in industrial engineering with a minor in international arts.
Castaneda graduated from Methacton High School in Eagleville in 2018. While at Penn State, she earned several awards, including the Partisan Award, John W. Oswald Award for Scholarship, the President Sparks Award, the President Walker Award and the Evan Pugh Scholar Senior Award. She also received the Bunton Waller Scholar and Leonhard Engineering scholar accolades. Additionally, Castaneda received the Harold and Inge Marcus Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering scholarship and an award from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
Castaneda was a member of the THON crowd entertainment committee from 2019-20. She also participated in the Society of Women Engineers, serving as director of professional development from 2020-22 and chair in 2018 and 2019. Castaneda was a mentor in the Women in Engineering Program from 2020-21 and a facilitated study group leader in 2019 and 2020. Castaneda was an Engineering Ambassador, where she worked to inspire K-12 students from historically underrepresented groups to improve the world through engineering. She was also a tour guide for the College of Engineering through Engineering Student Tours and Resources.
As a manufacturing intern at Mars Wrigley, Castaneda ran continuous improvement projects to reduce losses of product and profit. She interned in the operations management leadership program at GE Healthcare, aiming to implement lean manufacturing into the MRI manufacturing process. As an asset management and reliability engineering intern at Baltimore Gas and Electric, Castaneda evaluated asset health through extensive data analysis to recommend new procedures.
Following graduation, Castaneda will join Mars Wrigley as an industrial engineer.
